Running Review – VA 5K 36th Annual Memorial Day 5K
This run has always been a favorite of mine for years. To be truthful it has been years since I have run it.
2023 turned out to be another great run. Read below are some of my thoughts.
The Course
This year was a new course due to some onsite construction. Based on my Garmin the route run was actually 3.3 miles. The path we ran was fair with equal amounts of down hills and up hills. All hills are gradual rather than steep. If you are looking for a flat fast course this, is it!
One downside was the start and finish line set up. There were mats, a couple cones and a flag. No arch, banners or no truss set up. They got the job done but left me feeling uninspired.
The Atmosphere
Both pre-race and post-race the air of runners enjoying themselves was everywhere. The music in the background complimented the overall feeling but did not drown it out. You could see groups of runners talking, laughing, and having fun. What a race should be.
Registration
Registration and race day packet pick up went smoothly. Using the tools that Runsignup has available made everything go quickly. When there was a line, it was typically 5-6 participants and moved quickly.
The Swag
I got a great bag that was insulated and would be great for keeping your lunch cool. Inside was some good stuff. A stress ball, small notebook, and information on veterans’ services. I can’t rate the shirt because I did not get one. I registered online the week before race day but was told I didn’t get one although there did seem to be a good supply.
Overall
There were some downsides with the course length and start/finish line design. Overall If you are looking for a great race experience, I give two thumbs up to the VA 5K.
Just Run,
Chuck
